Today, we are back in Spain with a in Vigo and we do not have any scheduled plans or tours. Oh, I forgot to take a photo of the map on the stateroom TV. Our all ashore time was later, at 11am. The morning started with Emily at the gym and a trip to the Quiet Cove grabbing an Americano at Cove Cafe before moving to a not-so-quiet spot at a table in Cabanas, as I needed to take care of a couple things on a computer with some desk space. I did what needed to be done, and joined Isabelle for some more coffee down at Vista Cafe. It has been too chilly to sit outside this cruise on the upper decks in the morning. However, I think i may have found my new desk on deck 4; the old vacation planning desk that is no longer utilized! That is, until I start using it and they eventually remove the chair.
While we are docking, Chip & Dale were out on deck 4 having some fun in cute little chef outfits to which Isabelle took advantage of the opportunity and went outside for a quick meet & greet.
I pre-downloaded a Vigo area map on my iPhone to use for walking around the nearby port area, just like I did earlier this cruise. This worked flawlessly! We didn’t need an international day pass or WiFi for local points of interest searches, and turn by turn walking directions worked like a charm. It was really nice keeping my phone in my pocket and using my watch for the directions; a little more discrete way of touring making us appear that we knew where we were going. If you are going to download an area map, do so at home or on good WiFi, the smallest area i could download was about 250MB, I believe the larger area I selected in Barcelona was closer to 400mb.
While I said we did not have plans, we were referencing a port guide Emily found while researching the port: Vigo Cruise Port Guide: 13 Fun Things To Do Nearby. For casual sightseeing in the immediate port area, you can do it all on foot. We started along the port area towards Monumento a Jules Verne.
The Monumento a Jules Verne in Vigo, Spain, is a bronze sculpture depicting the famous French author seated on the tentacles of a giant octopus, created by José Molares and unveiled in 2005 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Verne’s death. This whimsical monument, located near the port, honors Verne’s connection to Vigo through his novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” where the city’s bay is featured in the story.
Off in the distance, you can spot red and green mini-lighthouses at the entrance of the marina. There is a pathway out which would offer a unique view of your cruise ship, but we opted to see what we could see on land.
Across the street, we strolled through Xardíns das Avenidas, also known as Jardines de Elduayen. This historic waterfront park was established in 1896 on reclaimed land near the port as part of urban development and later remodeled in the 1970s into an English-style garden and again in 1997 under the “Open Vigo to the Sea” project. This area features monuments including one to José Elduayen Gorriti.
A few blocks away from the water into the city, we reached Alameda da Praza de Compostela (Alameda Park) featuring a lovely garden walk, statues, and fountains.
Proceeded into the old town area of Vigo where we simply walked around the streets taking in the architecture and occasionally stopping in a shop to browse the local trinkets.
One of the oldest examples of fine architecture that remains in the city of Vigo, also known as “casa torre de Ceta e Arines”. It consists of two buildings: a sober late gothic tower and an elegant small palace in plateresque style. The palace has, In the jambs and lintel of the central span of the third floor, the characteristic plateresque ornamentation. On each side of that span, there is a Renaissance medallion. Another highlight on this floor is the prominent balcony and, on the second floor, the ogee arches. The complex was restored and currently houses the Camoes Institute. Since 1946 it has been considered a Historic- Artistic Monument
Circling back towards the port area, we were headed to the cathedral. However, once we arrived at Colexiata de Santa Maria de Vigo, we discovered mass was underway so we could only take in the beauty of the exterior.
Across the street, was a second hand book store, Circular Books, which did have some tiles in English including Walt Disney’s Donald in Wonderland. However, they were a cash-only business.
By now, it was time to pick a spot for lunch. Calle de las Oysters (Oyster Street) seemed to have a number of restaurants to pick from, but the best looking spots didn’t seem to have much to offer outside of things that one should avoid if they have a shellfish allergy.
I guess you could say we ‘settled’ for Bar grils seafood restaurant, as the menu offered wider, but still regional menu items.
After our causal lunch, we set out to see what we could find in the shops. The little stores were fun to walk in and through, some were maze like while others were not really accessible. There were some beautiful large plates & bowls, but not easy for those of us flying home. We stopped into a small market near the port. Compared to other grocery stores and bodegas we’ve stopped in, this felt more like a gas station store and not a destination.
For the most part, we covered the port area and started to make our way back to the cruise terminal. Our final stop was Centro Comercial A Laxe which is sorta like a mall with a number shops, restaurants, an a casino.
The highlight was a top floor observation deck with great views of Vigo and the Disney Fantasy.
Bonus, there were public washrooms, and you could connect to the ship’s WiFi from the rooftop swing.
Back onboard, we stopped in O’Gills for adult friendship bracelet making. We’ve made quite a number of friendship bracelets over the last couple years, not for the concert craze, but from Halloween Horror Nights. The alphabetical organization of beads in large bins made for an enjoyable experience.

Afterwards, craft time continued in O’Gills with wind chimes.

It was time to do a load of laundry, and while the Electrolux machines are amazing, there are longer cycle times that can throw off the flow. From my experience, wash cycles of 30 minutes resulted in clean and fresh clothes every time. The washers do a tremendous job of spinning the water out of the clothes the dryers need very little time to do their job that you may as well just stay in the launderette and enjoy a glass of vino.
We still had some time before the evening schedule started which means one thing, relaxation on deck 4 and enjoying the view!
Our dinner rotation brought us to Royal Palace, where we were served the Captains Gala dinner menu. Service remains great, but tonight I felt bad for the ladies. Not only did they sacrifice a better restaurant for lunch, the lobster tail they ordered was rubbery.
At the end of dinner, our server presented Isabelle with a “math” homework assignment.
We considered heading back ashore after dinner, but the gangway on deck 3 was in the process of closing up with less than an hour left before all aboard time. By the time we learned the open gangway was now on deck 1 due to the tides, there was not much time left to do or see anything worthwhile.
Shifting focus to onboard activities, we Initially planned to Monsters, Inc. Open Mike Nite (which sounded promising), but we ended up in Ooh La La where we enjoyed the drinks, atmosphere, and Ellis Lucero’s Billboard Biggest Hits since 1958 set.
We finished the night on deck 4 watching the setting sun as we sailed away from Vigo spotting the the pilot returning to port.
Time for sleeping. Hopefully, tomorrow I will remember to take a picture of the map before we head ashore in La Coruña.
