Tuesday morning and we are on the north western coast of Spain at the port of La Courña. The weather forecast looks dry starting out in the low 60ºs and hopefully increasing quickly to 72ºF. Emily headed to the gym, then it was time to head into port.

We have a third party tour booked today via Viator, which we have used successfully in the past. The specific tour we booked is: Explore the Highlights of La Coruña Shore Excursion for the over 4 hour tour, we paid just under $75 per person.

The tour operator contacted Emily with some more details ahead of our arrival letting us know we will be meeting our guide right outside of the ship and to look for a person with an orange umbrella at 9:45am. Just as we arrived on the dock, so did our very own Mary Poppins with her orange umbrella.

Unlike the other day, this was a group tour totaling 16 others from our ship. I had a hunch our day tour was going to be good after meeting our guide, Cristina, a local who shared with us that she was in school studying for her PhD. Within the first 5 minutes of our tour, she shared more information on the region than most guides share in an entire tour. Our first stop was the oldest Roman lighthouse still in operation, Torre de Hercules (Hercules Tower). Logistically speaking, we did not have the time to see everything offered on the tour and to climb to the top of the lighthouse. Separate admission is required and they only allow so many people in at a time – we knew this ahead of time and waking the around the base was good enough as the view was incredible.

We had a decent amount of time to walk around the area, down to some art installations as well as up the elevated base surrounding the tower for additional views of the area. The sun started to break through the morning cloud cover adding to the beauty of the area. From the tower, we spotted what appeared to be a dome or observatory looking building along the coastline. Sure enough, that was our next stop.

We past by the a massive beach cove that often host swimming and surfing completions. During the winter, the water can reach the roadway.

Following the coastline, we reached Monte de San Pedro. From this vantage point, we could see back to the Hercules Tower and the Disney Fantasy.

During the drive, our guide shared some information on the clothing store Zara that I’ve always ignored at Disney Springs. Amancio Ortega, the founder of Zara is from and still resides in A Coruña. Zara is celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary. According to our guide, the billionaire many times over still lives in a relatively modest home as he loves the quality of life A Coruña offers.

As I took in the beauty of the landscape, all i could envision was a long par 3 hole into the ocean breeze.

We returned to the bus and headed down a lovely brick road along the shoreline, the scenic view, back to the old town area passing the Millennium Obelisk, a 150-foot monument commemorating the start of the third millennium designed by Gerardo Porto.

We returned to what I’ll call the downtown port area and said goodby to our bus driver about half past noon.

The remainder of the tour was on foot starting with Plaza María Pita which was a stones throw from the Disney Fantasy.

Walking through the streets of old town we stopped off near the Real Colegiata Santa Maria del Campo church.

The stonework in the area was a reminder of the way things used to be built with quality starting with a strong foundation. The details are intricate and clearly handmade, but not perfect. Not perfect in a good way because the materials and construction were solid and are standing the test of time.

Stopping outside a convent, learned these little plazas are often used during musical festivals and from time to time feature a DJ and the nuns never seem to mind.

Walking around more, Cristina pointed out some Roman numerals on the granite pavers which were added before they were moved so the stones could be returned to the proper position with adjoining stones.

Our last big stop on the walking tour was Plaza de Azcárraga (Flour Square), a gorgeous spot covered with a canopy of trees.

Nearby, was a unique way finding marker for the Celtic Camino pilgrimage. The Celtic pilgrimage from A Coruña is a 75km route from A Coruña to Santiago de Compostela, known as the Camino Inglés or English Way, which pilgrims can combine with a prior 25km walk on an Irish Celtic Camino route to earn the Compostela. The pilgrimage gained exposure following a 2018 documentary, The Camino Voyage.

The tour culminated on the main road across from the port near the Obelisk clock with a nautical weather vane, the same area we were previously let off the bus.

Cristina told us about some spots for lunch. We browsed a few of the menus in Plaza de Maria Pita, but those seemed a little formal for the casual lunch we were after.

We found a table at O’Sampaio where we struggled with the menu, but we were just close enough to pick up the WiFi from the Disney Fantasy to enable my phone to do a quick translate to English.

Just as we made some headway, the server handed us an English language menu.

One thing I’m reminded of dining in Europe, lunches are not short. This is both good and bad. Good as we can casually enjoy lunch, and bad that we are often trying to maximize the time we have ashore. Emily ordered the traditional dish to the region – octopus with potatoes topped with salt and paprika, which she loved.

During our tour, we asked Cristina for another recommendation… Any guesses? We asked for the location of the closest grocery store. Sure enough, there was a full grocery store, Gadis, just on the other side of Plaza de María Pita.

I wish we stopped there first, I would have bought a selection of meats, cheeses, and a loaf of bread to enjoy in one the parks.

The Square of Humor was located near the entrance to the grocery store and featured a nod to Disneyland.

After stopping in a few stores, we made our way back to the ship at a little after 4 o’clock. Over at Guest Services, there were some new plaques to add the Fantasy’s collection from the first calls to Vigo and La Coruña.

After a quick stop in the stateroom, I headed out to a lounger on deck 4 to take work on a recent DCL promotion while enjoying the tranquility of the late afternoon on a quiet promenade deck with my family who were reading books.

For dinner, we skipped out on Animator’s Palate for the second time this cruise, meaning we did not step foot inside the restaurant. Instead, we ordered room service for a quick & light dinner.

This allowed us to head to the Walt Disney Theatre for the early show featuring mind reader, Chris Cox. Each guest was handed a piece of paper on the way in with instructions to fold and tear into quarters for use later in the show.

Chris did a great job tonight, and audience participation resulted in a great evening.

Earlier this cruise, we spotted flavored waffle cones in Sweet On You up on deck 11. Well, since we skipped dinner for room service, Isabelle and I saved room for those waffle cones.

Loved the idea, but i chose poorly picking raspberry sorbet. The sorbet was lovely, but simply didn’t pair well with the orange cone and that is all my fault.

From here, we went separate ways. I stayed on the pool deck to check out Mickey’s Color Spin Dance Party which i lasted less than 10-minutes before losing interest partially due to the fact I was eating a cold dessert & shivering under a blue DCL pool deck blanket for warmth. I thrive in the heat and humidity of Florida, scoffing at “weather alert” days as I head out the golf course in the summer afternoons, but as soon as the temps drop below 80ºF, I start falling apart.

I descended down to join the family in The Tube for 2000s Music trivia.

And that was that for our final port day for this cruise as tomorrow is a day at sea as we make our way to Southampton.
