2024 has brought us an explosion in the popularity of digital nomadism with new digital nomad visas, and traveling the world while maintaining your career is a very achievable reality for many.
But where should you go next?
The experts at InsureMyTrip have analyzed more than 40 countries currently offering digital nomad visas. They used lifestyle metrics, visa costs, and Wi-Fi speeds to determine which of these are the top 10 cities for digital nomads.
5. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur may be the destination that’s further away from the U.S. on this list, but it also has one of the lowest living costs, meaning it’s appealing to those nomads wanting to stretch their buck as far as possible.
Kuala Lumpur is highly recommended by experienced nomads, and the country has offered a digital nomad visa since October 2022.
From a practical perspective, Kuala Lumpur offers everything a digital nomad might need. Ultra-fast internet speeds, great connectivity, and diverse cultural experiences. The digital nomad community here is growing in size all the time.
What is the best reason to choose Kuala Lumpur as a digital nomad destination for foodies like me? The food is incredible! The cultural melting pot of Malay, Chinese, and Indian residents in the city is reflected in its cuisine.
4. Lisbon, Portugal
It may not be the cheapest destination on the list, but if you’re looking for somewhere that’s an easy place to relocate to with outstanding natural beauty, then Lisbon is a great choice.
The city has the highest-rated cafes of all the cities on this list, super speedy Wi-Fi, and a high safety score, too.
Like Malaysia, the Portuguese digital nomad visa was also introduced in October 2022.
If you want to work in the sun, then Lisbon is a great choice as it is the third sunniest city in Europe. And although it is pricier than choosing to live and work in South America, it is much cheaper than other European capital cities including London, Paris, and Amsterdam.
Lisbon is a fun and authentic city with an active digital nomad community. That means if you’re looking to meet up with like-minded people on your travels, then you’ll find that easy here.
3. Montevideo, Uruguay
In 3rd place is Montevideo, which is a beautiful city and one with a great digital nomad community already in place.
The culture here is warm and welcoming, and Montevideo is widely recognized as one of the safest cities in South America.
Like every other country on this list, Uruguay offers a dedicated digital nomad visa, and the country is also known for the quality of its high-speed internet.
Montevideo boasts unique architecture and it also has a rich cultural scene. Music, theater, and the arts all take center stage here.
2. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is an underrated city that boasts incredibly unique architecture and has more than 590 attractions to explore.
Other things that make Budapest so appealing to digital nomads are its high safety score (65.63, according to this report) and abundance of highly rated cafes where working with a coffee is both easy and enjoyable.
Hungary launched its digital nomad visa, also known as the White Card, in November 2021, making it a relatively early adopter of the scheme. And digital nomads, like tourists, are warmly welcomed here.
Because Budapest is so popular with digital nomads, you’ll find plenty of coworking spaces as well as like-minded travelers so that you’ll have an established sense of community if you choose to explore the city.
1. Brasilia, Brazil
Officially the top city for digital nomads, and the one considered the most surprising on this list, is Brasilia in Brazil.
But perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised.
After all, Brazil has been offering digital nomad visas since January 2022, and the low cost of living in Brasilia makes it an appealing choice for digital nomads on a budget.
According to the report, the average monthly cost of living for a single person in Brasilia is $819, which is 2.46 lower than it would be in the U.S.
The weather in the city is great, with 6.6 hours of sunshine a day on average, and the people are warm and welcoming, too. The city is also packed full of things to see and do, so your leisure time will never be dull.
The city is home to an abundance of fine Brazilian architecture, and is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty such as the Poco Azul natural swimming pool. In fact, Brasilia is so beautiful that in 1987 it was the first modern city to be listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site.
The Complete Top 10 List
The most popular region for digital nomads, according to this list, is South America. Locations such as Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina all ranked highly thanks to their rich culture, existing digital nomad communities, and fast internet speed.
