These Are The 10 Most Popular Landmarks To Visit This Summer According To A New Study

20/04/2023

Most everyone has a landmark they would like to see while traveling, and they can often be the deciding factor in choosing a particular destination.

It could be Times Square in New York or Sagrada Familia in Barcelona; the idea of seeing a specific monument is on every traveler’s mind.

We’ve sourced together ten famous monuments from a new study by Comparethemarket that captured how many times it was hashtagged on socials like Instagram.

These monuments range from destinations like the United States to Peru, and summer is the perfect season to visit them.

Start jotting them down if they are not already on your bucket list. Use this list as a springboard for your next vacation.

These are the ten most popular landmarks to visit this summer, according to a new study.

Burj Khalifa

The number one most hashtagged monument is the Burj Khalifa in the famous middle eastern city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

This towering skyscraper is the world’s tallest building. It’s about 2,722 feet. It was completed in 2009, beating out another tower called Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

The Burj Khalifa was built in the neo-futurism architectural style, similar to other buildings in the Dubai area. Dubai is super popular with other attractions like the Burj Al Arab (another building) and Ski Dubai (an indoor ski resort).

A couple of years ago, the idea of skiing in the Middle East was largely unheard of, but just like having the tallest skyscraper, Dubai made it happen.

If you’re heading to Dubai soon, check out their observation deck on the 124th floor.

Eiffel Tower

The city of love is a bucket list destination for almost every American if they haven’t been, and the Eiffel Tower is part of the reason why.

This beautiful tower was the number two most hashtagged monument this year, and whenever you see an image of Paris, the Eiffel Tower is bound to be somewhere in the picture.

It’s been open since 1889 and has become a cultural icon of France. It’s the tallest structure in the country, measuring 1,083 feet.

Times Square

Times Square in New York City is another cultural icon.

The road it sits on is adjacent to many Broadway shows and is a must-see for travelers in New York City. It’s about five blocks long from 42nd to 47th Street.

Times Square is also famous for hosting New Year’s Eve celebrations. Since 1904, people have been celebrating New Year’s Eve here, and it looks like it will be around for a while.

Today Times Square is a mix-used intersection popular with travelers for all the billboards and lights. Don’t be afraid to look like a tourist and get some amazing photos!

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is the third most hashtagged landmark, according to a new study from Comparethemarket.

The landmark is a grouping of three waterfalls that share a border with Canada and the United States.

It’s trendy to visit during the summer, and if you are in New York or Canada this summer, you should check it out.

Taj Mahal

Created as a tomb for his favorite wife, Emperor Shah Jahan had the palace completed in 1653. It took 22 years to be completed, and once finished, the emperor died five years later.

He is also entombed in the palace. Today it’s a gem of India and one of its most famous landmarks. It has appeared in countless films and is a must-see for many travelers.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is famous the world over. Many people wonder what could be so special about a giant canyon, but after visiting, you’ll understand.

Being a lot more impressive than it sounds, it’s an American world wonder. If you are in Arizona this summer, check out the sixth most hashtagged landmark.

Machu Picchu

Created as an emperor’s holiday estate around 1450, Machu Picchu was abandoned by the Incas, who abandoned it in 1572 because the Spanish were waging war.

It’s been theorized that the city was left because everyone died of smallpox introduced by the Europeans.

Today it’s considered one of the new seven wonders. It’s a hiker’s paradise and the seventh most hashtagged landmark.

Notre Dame

We almost lost this one in 2019. A fire nearly destroyed the medieval catholic cathedral that was consecrated in 1182.

The cathedral is one of France’s most popular attractions and inspired a few movies. It’s the eighth most searched hashtag on Instagram.

White House

Located in Washington, D.C., the White House is the present residence and workplace of the acting president of the United States.

Built by enslaved people, laborers, and immigrants in 1800, the White House today symbolizes everything America. It’s the 9th most hashtagged landmark.

Sagrada Familia

Last on this list is Sagrada Familia, which is still being built, but it started construction in 1882.

It was primarily designed by architect Antoni Gaudí who didn’t live long enough to see it completed. He’s currently buried in the church’s crypt.

Much of Barcelona is associated with the Sagrada Familia church. Like many others on this list, it’s become a cultural icon of its city.

Check out these landmarks if you travel this summer and find out how many you can cross off your bucket list.
