The Top 8 Cities Where LGBTQ+ Travelers Feel Most Welcomed According To Airbnb

26/05/2023

Last Updated 1 second agoThe travel industry has landed back on its feet after a wild few years of uncertainty. Tourism records continue to be shattered left and right, with more and more travelers wanting to take to the skies.

It seems as if everyone wants to get out of the house, whether it’s from being cooped up from the new work-from-home lifestyle or simply getting revenge on lockdowns and no-fun rules.

The beauty of this uptick in seeing the world is we all become more understanding of one another by seeing how others live and immersing ourselves in another culture.

Those in the LGTBQ+ community may benefit the most from the understanding that we are, first and foremost, all human.

Unfortunately, many places around the world are still not accepting of LGBTQ+ people. The good news is even previously closed-off countries are changing their tune and beginning to welcome the community.

Airbnb recently reported a strong increase in LGBTQ+ inclusive language from hosts. As much as 90%, actually.

While there is always room for improvement, major U.S. cities are broadly accepting of LGBTQ+ rights.

According to Airbnb’s latest data, these are the top 8 cities where LGBTQ+ travelers feel most welcomed:

8 – Austin, Texas

Austin isn’t just about funky music, margaritas, and breakfast tacos. Those are great and all, but this trendy city is known for being a very open-minded community.

In fact, if you have ever been to downtown Austin, you may have noticed a crosswalk in rainbow colors to signify their support of LGBTQ+ rights near the “gay bars” on and around 4th Street.

7 – Seattle, Washington

This beautiful Pacific Northwest city is a safe haven for LGBTQ+ travelers. Just like Austin, Seattle is known for being liberal and welcoming to all.

Many in the LGBTQ+ community congregate in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, where there is a vast array of gay-friendly establishments.

6 – San Francisco, California

It’s no surprise that San Francisco is one of the most welcoming cities toward LGBTQ+ visitors. This amazing California gem has been a staple in the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community for decades.

Wandering the city at any time of day, it’s not uncommon to run into gay rights activists. The welcoming nature of San Francisco is most felt in the Castro District, where the LGBTQ+ community will feel right at home.

5 – Nashville, Tennesee

This thriving city is known for its country music scene and nightlife, but it’s a place for anyone to enjoy and be embraced with Southern hospitality.

LGBTQ+ travelers will be welcome anywhere but may feel most at home around Church Street. This is area is where a flood of gay-friendly nightclubs are easily accessible for a night that will never end.

4 – Wilton Manors, Florida

This small area just North of Fort Lauderdale is a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community to be themselves.

According to Visit Florida, Wilton Manors is one of South Florida’s most famous “Gayborhoods”. This charming neighborhood has laid back small-town feel with easy walkability to the main attractions.

Known as America’s “second gayest city”, it is home to 140 gay couples per every 1000 couples.

3 – Portland, Maine

The heartthrob of Maine is extremely welcoming to LGBTQ+ guests. Although small compared to other major cities, Portland draws every type of visitor for its delicious food and coastal town charm.

LGBTQ+ travelers tend to gravitate toward the West End, as this district is home to multiple “gay bars”.

2 – Provincetown, Massachusetts

If you were to look at a map, Provincetown sticks out like a sore thumb. Literally this small town of Massachusetts has a long history, but it’s now mainly known for its nice beaches and hospitality toward the LGBTQ+ community.

Many LGBTQ+ people vacation here for its limitless welcoming nature, as there is not a “gay district” per se.

The vibe is so chill and carefree that it’s not uncommon at all to see same-sex couples holding hands on any street without a care in the world.

1 – Portland, Oregon

Not to be confused with Portland, Maine, the other Portland comes in ranked #1 and it’s easy to see why. Oregon’s largest city has been a major supporter of Pride for years.

The trickle-down effect of warmth and hospitality toward LGBTQ+ visitors has made them feel truly welcomed where 5-star reviews are pouring in across Portland Airbnb listings.

This notoriously open-minded city embraces everyone to be themselves, and it’s truly a place to call home for the LGBTQ+ community, whether it’s long-term or a short stay.
