Riverside Raises the Standard for Culinary Excellence on Europe’s Waterways Market-fresh menus, multiple dining venues and open-air barbecues turn every voyage into a culinary journey.
On Europe’s rivers, dining can be predictable — banquet-style meals, menus that rarely change, and little connection to the places outside the window. Riverside Luxury Cruises rewrites the script with a fresh, made-to-order approach that’s earned multiple culinary awards and a loyal following of food and wine lovers.
Riverside’s approach starts with a belief, held by owner Gregor Gerlach, that the culinary program should be as important as the destinations themselves, and given the budget to match. This commitment allows chefs not only to source the best ingredients from local markets but also to craft menus that surprise and delight returning guests with fresh, creative offerings.
The ships themselves have been designed to allow for this level of execution. Spacious galleys with multiple cooking stations and dedicated storage for fresh ingredients make it possible for chefs to cook everything to order. Each chef has a daily discretionary budget to shop locally, whether that means creating a dish with a fresh-caught fish purchased dockside that afternoon or sourcing artisanal cheeses from a village just up the river.
Regional flavors play an essential role. Guests sailing on Riverside Mozart on the Danube can sample a fun array of Hungarian dishes, both traditional and with a modern twist, at a special tapas style dinner. A barbecue lunch featuring freshly made pretzels and grilled German sausages are the perfect accompaniment to a sailing through the castle-lined Rhine Gorge onboard Riverside Debussy.
And while sailing through Burgundy and Provence on Riverside Ravel, the onboard sommelier is happy to recommend the perfect French red to pair with dinner of boeuf bourguignon and crêpes Suzette.
Multiple dining venues and experiences also distinguish Riverside from its peers.
On all three ships, guests will find:
◉ Waterside Restaurant is the heart of Riverside’s culinary program. Breakfast and lunch are served from the expansive Marketplace buffet with live cooking stations, vegan and vegetarian options, and fresh-baked bread and desserts. Dinner is a multi-course affair with paired wines on offers.
◉ Atelier, with its laid-back café vibe, offers all-day dining through a curated buffet that changes between breakfast and lunch, and a best-of menu.
◉ A barista-run coffee bar offers espresso drinks and sweet treats like freshly made bubble waffles and ice cream.
◉ Dining in the intimate Vintage Room is a multi-course, wine-paired dinner hosted by the sommelier, highlighting rare vintages and exceptional ingredients.
◉ Barbecues on the Vista Deck offer al fresco dining and incredible views alongside giant prawns, ribeye steaks, lamb chops, and vegetables grilled on Big Green Eggs.
◉ Riverside is one of the few river cruise lines to offer 24-hour room service for every cabin.
◉ On Riverside Mozart, the casual aft lunch venue, Blue serves burgers, flatbreads and milkshakes.
Riverside Luxury Cruises is a winner in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for 2024, received Cruise Critic’s 2023 and 2024 Editors’ Pick Award for Best Dining in the River Category, and Riverside Ravel’s itineraries through Burgundy and Provence were named by Forbes as the Best European River Cruises for Foodies.
