We at Travel Off Path love to splurge on ourselves from time to time, but we all understand how poorly planned vacations can come with sticker shock.
That’s not the case for one of Michigan’s most storied towns, which includes a time capsule island in close reach.
With accommodations averaging under $50 per night from September 22, 2025 – December 21, 2025, it’s almost unheard of to find such a beautiful destination with bargain bin rates.
While Michigan weather may be beginning to feel the chills of fall, the scenery is no less stunning with vibrant foliage only enhancing what’s already a picturesque hideaway at the tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
Mackinaw City: America’s Most Affordable Fall Getaway
Despite their popularity, there’s a reason many travelers still haven’t checked off some of the world’s most iconic destinations.
Heck, even though I have nearly 40 countries under my belt, I visited Paris for the first time just last year.
That’s the beauty of small towns. They often reflect pricing closer to bygone eras than modern times, and obviously, that’s the case for Mackinaw City, HomeToGo’s top recommendation for savings this fall.
Nestled along Lake Huron, Mackinaw City boasts centuries-old landmarks, classic lighthouses, and nostalgic small-town flair.
Like most small towns, one of the best ways to turn back the page is to book a stay in a cozy inn or bed and breakfast.
For name-brand hotels, Holiday Inn Express is only $60 per night in November, while Hamilton Inn sits along a gorgeous shoreline perfect for sunsets and only costs $65 per night.
The ladder would likely be my go-to for location sake as it’s steps from the lake and walkable to downtown’s many delights.
Given HomeToGo is a vacation rental platform, this is where their calculations help you out the most.
There are ample rentals with far more space than a typical hotel room, and they claim to beat hotel rates too, since their research found rentals in Mackinaw average just $47 per night through fall.
One of the town’s most popular attractions Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse only costs $11 to enter, and if you want to venture off to yet another timeless locale, a ferry ride to Mackinac Island is just $38.
Mackinac Island: Pack Your Walking Shoes
Don’t get me wrong, Mackinaw City is a beautiful town. But a visit to this region without checking out Mackinac Island should be a crime!
In fact, it’s the claim to fame for this side of Michigan’s vast lakes, and it’s been receiving tons of hype for the fall season.
Every travel publication and their mother have been crowning Mackinac as a ‘top fall getaway’ in one form or another, and what makes this old-timey island truly unique is that cars haven’t been allowed since the 1800s.
So, you can take a step back in time and get around by horse and buggy — literally.
But the island is rather small, so packing your walking shoes on the ferry is definitely Option A, and riding horse carriages is more of a gimmick than a necessity, like Central Park.
You’ll find Victorian charm, cozy stays, a strip of boutiques, and unmatched lake views, especially surrounded by lush foliage.
How To Get To Mackinaw City
Pack up the car because you’re going on a road trip!
Given the landscape and lack of air connectivity, Mackinaw City is best reached by on 4 wheels.
While Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) is located just 20 minutes away, there’s only 2 flights here:
- Detroit (DET)
- Chicago (ORD – seasonal)
If you were to drive from Detroit, for example, you’re up for at least a 4-hour adventure, but the roadside scenery is gorgeous this time of year.
Otherwise, you can fly into Traverse City (TVC), another of Michigan’s postcard lake towns, just 2 hours from Mackinaw City.
