New Limits to the Chase Aeroplan Pay Yourself Back Feature

01/01/2025

Beginning January 1, 2025, there will be a new limit on the number of Aeroplan points that can be redeemed in the Travel Category through the Chase Aeroplan Card Pay Yourself Back Feature.Chase and Aeroplan have introduced a new annual cap of 200,000 Aeroplan points for redemptions in the Travel Category, which includes hotels, car rentals, ride-shares, flights, and more. When the Pay Yourself Back feature first launched, there was no limit on point redemptions for travel purchases and annual fees.New Limits to the Chase Aeroplan Pay Yourself Back FeatureThere’s a new limit to the number of Aeroplan points you can redeem annually through the Chase Aeroplan Card Pay Yourself Back Feature in the Travel Category. As of January 1, 2025, cardmembers can redeem up to 200,000 Aeroplan points at a rate of 1.25 cents (all figures in USD) each toward any purchase in the travel category which includes hotels, car rentals, rideshare, flights and more. When Pay Yourself Back initially launched, there was no limit and points could be redeemed for the travel category and annual fee.The program has since expanded to include the Dining and Grocery category as a permanent offering for Cardmembers, which will continue with no limit. In announcing the redemption cap, Aeroplan and Chase said the new limit should accommodate nearly all cardmembers who use this benefit. The Pay Yourself Back® feature first became available on the Aeroplan® Credit Card by Chase in January, 2023. Pay Yourself Back® refers to the ability to redeem Aeroplan points towards any travel purchase at a rate of 1.25 cents per point (all figures in USD) giving cardholders another option for redeeming their points. Think hotels, car rentals, even Air Canada Vacation packages and gift cards. While the Travel category now has a cap of 200,000 Aeroplan points per year, cardmembers can still redeem points through Pay Yourself Back without any limits for annual fee payments, dining, and grocery purchases.Redemption rates remain unchanged and are as follows:

  • Travel and Annual Fee redemptions: 1.25 cents per point (8,000 points = $100 statement credit)
  • Dining and Grocery: 0.8 cents per point (12,500 points = $100 statement credit)

How the Pay Yourself Back Feature WorksPay Yourself Back® is Chase’s feature for redeeming points directly towards statement credits at a fixed value. Usually, this is only for certain categories of spending, and doesn’t apply to all purchases. For example, cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card can redeem points for charity donations at a rate of 1.25 cents per point.† For gas stations and groceries, the Pay Yourself Back® value is slightly lower. On the more premium Chase Sapphire Reserve® Credit Card, cardholders can redeem points at an elevated rate of 1.5 cents per point towards charities† and a lower 1.25 cents per point when redeeming against purchases at gas stations, grocery stores, or the annual fee.†For all cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards, you’re also able to redeem at the optimal rate of 1.25 or 1.5 cents per point when booking travel through the Chase Travel℠ portal.†The process of using the Pay Yourself Back feature is fairly straightforward. When you’re logged into your Chase account, simply click the “Pay Yourself Back” button. You can then select from your eligible transactions to decide which you want to redeem points for. You’ll then be given the option of how many points you want to redeem and you can apply those points toward all or part of the purchase cost.Once you’ve completed your redemption, you’ll receive a confirmation and a statement credit will appear on your account. Statement credits will be posted to your card within 3 business days of a request to redeem and will appear on your monthly Chase credit card billing statement within 6 to 8 weeks.ConclusionAs of January 1, 2025, there’s a limit to the number of Aeroplan points you can redeem through the Chase Aeroplan Pay Yourself Back feature in the Travel Category.Cardmembers can redeem up to 200,000 Aeroplan points toward any purchase for travel, hotels, car rentals, rideshare, flights and more. Previously there was no cap. At the same time, The Dining and Grocery category has been made a permanent offering for Cardmembers, which will continue with no limit. While the update may not be ideal for some travelers, the cap remains generous. With Aeroplan 25K status becoming more valuable and easier to achieve through the Chase Aeroplan card, early 2025 could be an excellent time to consider signing up.
