Both things on my Christmas list this year!
So it’s great news that the ultra low-cost airline Avelo has expanded beyond the U.S .this winter, launching their first international route.
The destination? Jamaica. A stunningly beautiful island of waterfalls and rivers, incredible beaches, and a pulsating music scene.
Here’s what you need to know about this exciting new international route.
Avelo Launches Now International Route To Jamaica
This long-awaited new flight route will depart from Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut. It will fly nonstop to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
This is significant for the Jamaican tourism industry for the island to be chosen as the first international destination for the affordable brand.
The new route will be a twice weekly flight, operating on Wednesday and Saturday. Meaning that you can choose to really relax with a whole week in the sun, or just take a short break to soak up that vital vitamin D.
The flight route launched on November 16, and is available to book now.
Of course, when you hear the words ‘ultra low cost airline’ you start daydreaming about flight prices cheaper than your morning coffee. So I checked out the prices on this route to see just how ultra low cost it could be!
Flying out for a week from Wednesday January 8 to Wednesday January 13 would cost $99 for the outbound flight and $220 for the inbound flight. This is a total cost of $319 for the return flight based on the cheapest available cabin class.
If you can fly out fairly last minute then the cheapest flights right now leave on Saturday December 7 and return on Saturday December 14. This would cost $99 for the outbound flight and $172 for the inbound flight, giving a total cost of $271.
Why Visit Montego Bay, Jamaica
As the name suggests, Montego Bay airport is conveniently close to Montego Bay. The heart of Montego Bay is around 3.9 km, or a 10 minute drive, from Sangster International Airport.
This makes transferring to and from the hotel both easy and time efficient if you do want to enjoy a short break.
But there are more reasons to visit Montego Bay than just its proximity to the airport!
Montego Bay is famous for its beautiful beaches, its abundance of luxury resorts and (if it’s your kind of thing) its world-class golf courses. The nightlife here has a high energy vibe that’s perfect for those looking to party.
If you want to relax and unwind on sugar white sands then the best beach in Montego Bay is Doctor’s Cave Beach. As well as having incredible views and soft sand for sunbathing, this is also one of the most popular beaches in the area for swimming and snorkeling.
Away from the beach, you shouldn’t miss the Martha Brae River. Many of the most iconic photos of Montego Bay are taken here with tourists floating on bamboo rafts through the jungle.
You can take a guided tour down the Martha Brae River with tours starting from $50. Many of these include transportation to and from your hotel, making this a fun but also incredibly easy adventure.
Its secluded nature means that Montego Bay is perfect for a romantic break, though it is easy to hire a car or organize a tour to explore the rest of the island from here too. And the shallow bays are a great choice for kids and families too.
If you’re interested in snorkeling then don’t miss the Montego Bay Marine Park. This is the first declared Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Jamaica and is a great spot for snorkeling and nature spotting. You can take a glass bottom boat tour, a bird watching tour, or a sunset boat tour here.
