In honor of King’s Day in the Netherlands, Holland America Line unveils a new mascot. The cruise line is introducing the newest addition to the family, Lewie the Lion.
Lewie loves traveling by sea, and he will make his debut in gift shops across the Holland America fleet of ships in late summer 2023. Donning his orange tie and majestic mane, Lewie takes great pride in his lineage. Lions have been a national symbol of strength and courage to the people of the Netherlands for generations.
King’s Day is a Dutch national holiday celebrating King Willem-Alexander’s birthday on April 27th. The original holiday began on August 31, 1885, as Prinsessedag, or Princess’s Day, in honor of Princess Wilhelmina. King’s Day took on its current name, Koningsdag, on April 27, 2014, after King Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, ascended to the throne the previous year.
On this holiday, the people of the Netherlands host big, orange-accented celebrations in honor of the royal House of Orange-Nassau.
Given the cruise line’s Dutch heritage, Holland America hosts King’s Day-inspired events year-round on its cruise ships. The line’s signature Orange Party lets guests and crew don some orange attire for a night of music, dancing, and drinks. If you are cruising on HAL, be sure to attend this festive party!
